Wadhams Lecture Series: Milman Parry and Oral Culture

January 8, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Wadhams Free Library
Learn about the history and genius of Milman Parry with Colin Wells on Wednesday, January 8th, at 7:30pm at the Wadhams Free Library.

The Wadhams Free Library announces the next lecture in their series: “The Memory of Song: The Short Life, Mysterious Death, and Revolutionary Genius of Milman Parry” presented by Colin Wells on Wednesday, January 8th, at 7:30pm.

About Milman Parry

Harvard classical scholar Milman Parry died of an accidental gunshot wound in 1935 at the age of only thirty-three. Parry had formulated a revolutionary theory about the foundation of Western literature, but at the time of his death he had written only a few pages of the book in which he planned to lay it out.

Based on Parry’s few published articles, a leading authority later called him “the Darwin of Homeric scholarship.” But Parry was more than that. He was the Darwin of culture. Author, historian and Westport resident Colin Wells explains how Parry’s ideas about oral culture forever changed our understanding of how culture evolves – and how it shapes the way we think. As with all of the library’s Wednesday lectures this event is free and open to the public!
