My Lai Memorial Exhibit at Whallonsburg Grange

September 7, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

One event on September 8, 2018 at 12:00 pm

The My Lai Memorial Exhibit is coming to the Whallonsburg Grange Hall on Friday and Saturday, September 7-8 from 12:00pm to 7:30pm, with an opening reception Friday from 6:00pm – 7:30pm, and a speakers program and discussion each evening from 7:30pm – 9:00pm. The exhibit is free, but donations are much appreciated.

John Brown Lives! is partnering with Chicago Veterans for Peace, and a follow-up Oral History workshop and screening will take place on Sunday, September 9 at the John Brown Farm in Lake Placid, NY.

The Memorial Exhibit, a project of Chicago Veterans for Peace (VFP), honors the Vietnamese people who died as a result of our political and military actions in their country during their American War. The exhibit is a strong anti-war response to the Pentagon’s $63 M commemorative campaign to glorify our unnecessary, unjust and immoral military intervention in Vietnam. The exhibit supports the mission of VFP – to seek justice for veterans and victims of war, expose the true costs of war and work for peace.

The exhibit was developed by local Essex artist Mac MacDevitt, an Associate Member of Chicago VFP, who is on a nationwide tour with the Memorial Exhibit. Mac reports that the exhibit is “humanly interactive”. As part of the exhibit, participants are invited to build sculptural collages, write in the Exhibit Journal, engage in dialogue, and share their artwork and comments with other participants and on social media.

The exhibit was hosted by VFP chapters in Santa Fe, San Diego, Fresno, San Francisco, Spokane and Iowa City on its spring tour. The exhibit is designed to be welcoming, open and non-judgmental. Mac shared that he “was moved by the openness and depth of the dialogue that was stimulated by the exhibit experience and the connections that participants made with each other.”
