LYCEUM: NAVIGATING THE VERTICAL WORLD
October 12, 2021 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
The Grange Fall Lyceum lecture series: NAVIGATION
How do we find our way in the world? This series will explore some aspects of human and animal navigation, from recognizing landmarks in the night sky to cartography, vertical route-finding, and the long-distance migrations of birds and fish.
Navigating the Vertical World
Cliffs, crags and ledges are often described as being liminal spaces in the cartography world – strikingly obvious and intriguing to many, yet easily accessible to only a select few. Rock and ice climbing guide Mark Scott will try to explain the process of ascending a large cliff, whether it’s a first ascent or a well-trodden classic.
Mark Scott grew up in the Champlain Valley and was out hiking, cross-country skiing and getting firewood with his family from a young age. After being introduced to climbing as a teenager, it became a driving force in his life. Through climbing, Mark has traveled to Peru, New Zealand and throughout the American West. For him, it is a pursuit that is both empowering and humbling. He guides climbers throughout the Adirondacks and is the owner of Great Range Mountain Guides.
