Celebrate Summer Farm Tour
August 15, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm| $5 – $25
Essex Farm is hosting a Celebrate Summer farm tour on Saturday, August 15th. The tour leaves from the barnyard at 10am and will cover the vegetable fields, pasture, and livestock areas. “Summer is a wonderful time of year to see a highly diversified farm running at full tilt,” says owner Kristin Kimball. “The summer tour shows what the farm looks like at the peak of production, as the plant, animals and farmers try to capture the sunlight and heat of August in the North Country. It is an exciting and busy time of year.” Kimball is the author of The Dirty Life, a 2010 memoir about the farm’s start-up year. Bill McKibben called it “a wonderfully told tale of one of the most interesting farms in the country.”
Participants should come prepared to walk long distances over rough ground. There will be a potluck lunch at noon in the farmyard. After lunch, there will be an optional self-guided hike along the farm roads to some of the farm’s more remote areas.
Essex Farm is an 800 acre, draft horse-powered farm. The farm offers a full-diet, year-round, free-choice membership, including milk, meats, vegetables, fruits and grains, and provides training and research opportunities through the Essex Farm Institute. In the last year, the Kimballs have launched a farm-to-door weekly delivery option for New York City households, and added an on-farm store, which is open to the public every day, from 8am-6pm.
Essex Farm is located at 2503 NYS Route 22 in Essex, one mile from the Essex-Charlotte ferry. The tour will take place rain or shine. Suggested donation: $25 adults; $5 children. The farm will host one more tour during the growing season on October 10th.
