Sunday, February 2
At Whallonsburg Grange Hall
Tickets are $7.50 for adults and only $3 for those under 18.
The Champlain Valley Film Society presents: Captain Phillips.
Nominated for four Golden Globe awards, including Best Dramatic Motion Picture, the film tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, and the 2009 hijacking of his cargo ship Maersk Alabama off the coast of Somalia. The Los Angeles Times called it “piercingly realistic.”
Special Guest: The Real Captain Phillips
Vermont’s Richard Phillips will be the very special guest of the Champlain Valley Film Society on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. when it screens Captain Phillips, the Oscar-nominated film based on his harrowing experience dealing with pirates off the coast of Somalia.
Captain Richard Phillips is a U.S. Merchant Marine and a veteran of 34 years at sea. He wrote the book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS and Dangerous Days at Sea about his time as captain of the unarmed Maersk Alabama cargo ship when it was boarded by Somali pirates in April of 2009.
How much of the movie is true and how much is Hollywood imagination? No one knows better than Phillips, and he will be available to answer audience questions.
