Adirondack Iron: Creator of Boom Towns and Ghost Towns, 1750s-1970s
At Whallonsburg Grange Hall

Iron was the backbone of towns throughout the Adirondacks for decades, especially along Lake Champlain. The iron industry had a major role in the settlement of the region, overall economic development and change over time, and attracted distinct ethnic groups to the region. This illustrated talk on the history and geography of the Adirondack-Champlain Iron Industry will look at the rise, growth, and geographic spread of iron-ore mining, smelting, and related industries; and the principal forces which gave impetus to those developments.

Talk by John Moravek, retired Associate Professor of Geography, SUNY Plattsburgh. $5; students free.
